In the FlexChem project, chemical manufacturing operations that run at as constant a capacity as possible were made more dynamic so that power consumers such as electric motors (that drive pumps, blowers and agitators) or electric heaters can be operated more demand-responsively without having major impacts on chemical manufacturing operations. The vertical integration methodology developed in the project can be used to operate such electrical equipment components so that they adapt to the power supply. This will boost the competitiveness of Saxony-Anhalt’s chemical industry and the findings will help stabilize the grid even as it is upgraded for renewables.
